How To Make Your New Log Cabin Warm And Comfortable

Log cabin kits are now available in lots of styles and designs. Do you want something with a sunroof? You got it. Do you prefer a dwelling with huge windows? Just say so. Do you prefer a cabin with a wooden patio? Just browse through the pages.

Those designs have one thing in common, that is, they are made of logs, or solid wood. Since the logs are stacked up to form the structure, it is usual that there will be tiny spaces between the logs and boards. Unfortunately, these spaces enable cool air and drafts to seep inside, severely lessening the heating efficiency in your home. Lacking proper insulation, the interior of your residence will become uncomfortably freezing during autumn or winter. Worse, you will have to pay an enormous heating bill, considering that your heating system is forced to work doubly hard.

To make your log cabins warm and comfortable and to decrease heating bills, you need to install some sort thermal insulation system in your cabin.

1. Prevent wind chill from going inside the house by sealing the gaps with caulking. Be sure to caulk the usually overlooked joints where the wall and the roof join together. Log home caulking is a silicon-based sealant similar to window caulking and can be applied with a caulk gun. Apply the caulk to both the interior and exterior of the cabin.

2. When the caulk dries, step inside and run your hand along the seams of the logs and sides of the wall. If you feel cold air blowing, apply more caulk to that area. You can "see" smaller cold air drafts and leaks easier if you utilize a thermal imaging camera.

3. Install a few layers of R-value fiberglass insulation in your attic. R-value fiberglass insulation layers work well for the attic. Make sure the layers cover all areas including between the joists of the attic. You may need to pul l out a few boards to make sure that the joists are filled in completely.

4. If your log cabin has an open or vaulted ceiling, install insulating sheeting before adding any roofing material.
